Patagonia is one of the best-known brands for outdoor clothing, and a hugely successful business by any usual measure for (capitalist) success. But it's also, paradoxically, anti-consumerism. Patagonia's clothing has a lifetime warranty, the company offers a free repair service, and the brand has even run ad campaigns telling people not to buy its products. Plus, you can’t go anywhere on the company's website without being asked to join its environmental activism. As someone who thinks a lot about the impact clothing has on the Earth, I became really interested in this brand when I was searching for environmentally friendly outdoor wear. I saw Patagonia wasn’t just following the sustainable clothing trend – it was setting it. On further investigation, I found a brand that makes a distinction between “bad” growth and “good” growth – and wants to do things that help good growth. Can selling clothing ever be compatible with a good impact on the environment? Probably not, but this clothing brand is trying to achieve just that.
